Chosen Horror Genre

Supernatural

We chose to do a supernatural horror for our short film.

The definition of a supernatural horror is "a film that combines aspects of horror film and supernatural occurences inclusing ghosts and demons, and many supernatural horror films have elements of religion. Common themes in the genre are the afterlife, the Devil and demonic possession". In my opinion a supernatural horror is a "supposed" work of fiction (depending on what your beliefs are) that mainly relies on supernatural or paranormal elements to push the narrative onwards, usually featuring things like ghosts, demons and monsters etc.

Examples of supernatural horror films:

  • The Conjuring (2013)
  • Insidious (2011)
  • The Omen (1976)
  • Sinister (2012)
  • Dead Silence (2007)
  • Poltergeist (1982)
  • Paranormal Activity (2007)
  • Carrie (1976)
  • Event Horizon (1997)
  • The Babadook (2014)
As you can see, some of the best and most popular horror films ever made fall into the supernatural genre. There is something about them that does actually make us as an audience question what is real and what is not. Not only do they provide us with jumps and scares like any normal horror, they introduce us to beings and elements that we are not normally exposed to. In some ways, super natural horror is an escape from reality and the familiar, but opens a window into what is possible and plausible, challenging both our perception on horror and life, and what happens after.
